From Traditional to Fashion Statements

Kimonos have been a part of Korean culture for centuries and are now becoming popular in the fashion world. Straight cuts of fabric were sewn together to create a garment that fit every sort of body shape, it was easy to wear and infinitely adaptable.

The first ancestor of the kimono was born in the Heian period (794-1192)

Kimono, in English, means “wearing thing.” But the garment everyone associates with Japan was not always called by that name. By the Edo period (1603-1868) it had evolved into a unisex outer garment called kosode. Literally meaning “small sleeves,” the kosode was characterized by smaller armholes.

What does it mean to wear a Kimono?

The kimono is the culmination of Japanese philosophy, wisdom and aesthetics,

Kosode was one of the key elements of what it meant to be Japanese.

A kimono is incomplete on its own: It needs an obi and accessories such as an obijime cord and obiage cloth. "When wearing modern clothes, your personality can be shaded by the view of the designer, but when you wear a kimono, the kimono expresses your personality.

Fabric quality, choice of pattern, thread, paint, wood-block print, and color were essential criteria for presenting the rank, age, gender, and refinement of the person wrapped in it.

Each individual garment was the biodata of its wearer. In the same way, Edo kosode and Hinagata bon are the biodata of an age. By wearing art, early modern Japanese left us a remarkable insight into their world and into what it meant to be Japanese before foreign influence.

kimono was seen as an heirloom that parents gave to daughters who were leaving home for marriage. The kimono became a visible yet silent link between between woman, mother, and cultural protector. Parents chose gorgeous pieces for formal occasions. But what has become popular over the past two decades are down-to-earth designs.

Thanks to a growing secondary market, the kimono is no longer something special but instead more of a fashion statement that people can enjoy freely.
